I am 15 years old and love to write. I think it is one of my strong points. and would like to make a career out of it. I would like to write books, but i love movies as well. I would like to get into film making and need advice about what i can do now to prepare for this. Thanks a lot!
watch a lot of movies
read a lot of screenplays
read a lot of screenplays of movies that you’ve watched.
write a lot
write a lot of stories
write a lot of screenplays
write screenplays for the stories you made
study film. understand the whole business. Note that most everybody in the business knows the history as well as the jobs of all the other departments.
Take film history at your local community college (it’s cheap). If you can only take one, take modern (note this is 1945+ usually (postwar))
Look on the internet. The interent is one of the best resources you’ll ever have. I’m sure you’ll find forums and other sites revolving around film making and/or maybe specifically screen writing.
Also, write a lot
If this is REALLY what you want to do (and not just “eh maybe”) Then get on top of it. If it’s your passion then you’ll love doing it, you’ll hate all the work and practice and studying, but you’ll still love it.
did i say write a lot? you need to do that.
Since you are so young, just continue to write, learn to express yourself through your writing. Its the best way to improve your craft. There is no specific way to get into the business, you have to just want it and you will get it. As for me I got my first job in television by being tenacious. I went and spoke to the producer about working at the station. Honey everything in life that you want you have to go after it.
